  1. Apparently 16750s have improved/existing hardware flow-control logic, and are available on some PC cards and, I assume, some ISA or PCI cards. (Well, one Google hit for the “Anycom ECO II Single Serial PC Card,” at least.)

    This might be a workaround for anyone who desperately needs RS-232 for something, unless it isn’t.

    Meanwhile, I’m happy to note that my completely bizarre (uses an XOR’d modulation of DTR and RTS for both power and data, to allow for what might be a working RS-232 passthrough) X-10 “Firecracker” transmitter is working great with ‘bottlerocket’ from pkgsrc. Now I can simulate dawn before noon here in rainy New England… :)
