IDE disks like old 40-pin connector IDE – those are a problem. I dunno about virtualization. I don’t have a machine available to test on, but Hyper-V definitely can start up a DragonFly system. It was enough of a nonissue I don’t remember what I even used.

@Eric, the tmpfs improvements will be in 5.8 release.

@BSDfan, IDE disks are problematic in DragonFly, but virtio/SATA disks work fine.

DragonFly runs fine on my Ryzen 2600 and 3700X, where mobos are, I believe, B450 and X570. Yes, there was an ethernet glitch on one of them. You have to use the whatever BIOS compatibility support mode (in your BIOS, or actually EFI), and you are fine.

I keep hoping DragonflyBSD will boot on my desktop. Last time I was astonished by what seemed to be Ethernet trouble. While, DF runs fine on an old Dell Pentium 4 with built-in Intel graphics, that is not as much fun as the 8-core Ryzen.

Any chance the speed improves to tmpfs mentioned in

I also tested a snapshot from a few days ago, tried to install it as a desktop on my machine, but the X does not work well on AMD Kaveri (I think? not on my desktop workstation right now). So reverted to Linux :( (tempted to install NetBSD but was afraid that I will settle for it). Well, hopefully next time.

Hmmm, I just done test. Hyper-V on Windows 8.1
On both DragonFly 5.6.2 and snapshot from yesterday i’ve got errors at boot:
ad0: FAILURE – SETFEATURES ENABLE WCACHE status=51 error=0
ad0: TIMEOUT – READ_DMA retrying (1 retry left) LBA=39847937
ad0: FAILURE – SETFEATURES ENABLE WCACHE status=51 error=0
ad0: TIMEOUT – READ_DMA retrying (0 retries left) LBA=39847937
ad0: FAILURE – SETFEATURES ENABLE WCACHE status=51 error=0
ad0: FAILURE – READ_DMA timed out LBA=39847937

Installer doesn’t pass initializing partition table.
Disk type IDE on Hyper-V. When I change to SCSI disk isn’t detected.

I ran DragonFly under Hyper-V relatively recently; should work? “Works” for me and “works” for you may be different, though.
